    well, this conversation is comforting. We have homeschooled our 3rd grader DS and have taught him math the way we remember. Now he needs to go to school because of scheduling conflicts. New math, one more thing I'm not looking forward to.

    I think I read something like 70% of firefighters are volunteer firefighters, actually.  The number was verified by my SIL (who is one).
    I guess it's the sort of job you do part time volunteering for so that you don't get burned out. :D

    (Also it pays horribly anyway, doesn't it? Gotta have a paying job so you can firefight on the side?)
    Also consider that most of the volunteer firefighters are in towns of a few hundred to a thousand or two who couldn't afford a fully staffed station. Wild guess, but in my county of maybe 130000 there are probably equal amounts of paid vs unpaid


    And most of the firefighters like beer.
